ABSTRACT

Aim: The present in vitro study aimed to evaluate the bond strength of a bulk fill composite on dentin surfaces prepared with the Er: YAG laser. Methods: Twenty-four permanent third molars were selected and divided into 2 groups: CP - Conventional preparation with high-speed handpiece (control) and LA (laser) - Preparation with Er: YAG laser. The occlusal surface was removed to expose coronal dentin, which was subsequently prepared with a high-speed handpiece or Er: YAG laser (350mJ, 4Hz, 1.5 ml/min water flow). Both groups were restored with Filtek One Bulk Fill (3M ESPE) composite resin. After 24 hours, the samples were evaluated for microtensile bond strength (µTBS), fracture pattern, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: The data obtained in the µTBS test were submitted to t-test (α=0.05). The results showed no difference in µTBS when the different types of cavity preparation were compared (ρ=0.091). Fracture patterns revealed the prevalence of cohesive fracture in composite resin in CP (83.3%) and adhesive fracture in LA (92.1%). In the SEM analysis, the LA group demonstrated the presence of gaps between the composite resin and the irradiated dentin surface. The hybrid layer exhibited more regularity with the presence of longer and uniform resin tags in the CP group. Conclusion: The type of cavity preparation did not influence the values of bulk fill composite resin µTBS to dentin. Fracture patterns and scanning electron microscopy analyses suggested less interference at the adhesive interface in preparations performed using CP

ABSTRACT

Introduction:The aesthetic rehabilitation of endodontically treated teeth depends on the destruction degree of the crown, the bone support, type of prosthesis, andchewing forces. In these cases, indirect restorations with composite resins are an excellent alternative. The indirect composite resins have improved physical and mechanical properties due toincorporatingof inorganic fillersand multifunctional monomers. These components offer a greater bonding strength to the indirect restorations, which is advantageous for further rehabilitations with ceramic crowns. Objective:To present an aesthetic rehabilitation of anterior teeth with indirect composite resin as a feasible and less expensive treatment alternative.Case Report:Upon clinical examination, extensive and deficient restorations were observed in the upper anterior teeth. The proposed treatment plan was the aesthetic rehabilitation of endodontically treated teeth with indirect restorations using ceromer. Conclusions:This treatment represented an excellent alternative for aesthetic rehabilitation of endodontically treated teeth in cases of great dental crown destruction or small dental absences (AU).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND Plasmodium vivax, the major cause of malaria in Latin America, has a large subtelomeric multigene family called vir. In the P. vivax genome, about 20% of its sequences are vir genes. Vir antigens are grouped in subfamilies according to their sequence similarities and have been shown to have distinct roles and subcellular locations. However, little is known about vir subfamilies, especially when comes to their functions. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the diversity, antigenicity, and adhesiveness of Plasmodium vivax VIR-E. METHODS Vir-E genes were amplified from six P. vivax isolates from Manaus, North of Brazil. The presence of naturally acquired antibodies to recombinant PvBrVIR-E and PvAMA-1 was evaluated by ELISA. Binding capacity of recombinant PvBrVIR-E was assessed by adhesion assay to CHO-ICAM1 cells. FINDINGS Despite vir-E sequence diversity, among those identified sequences, a representative one was chosen to be expressed as recombinant protein. The presence of IgM or IgG antibodies to PvBrVIR-E was detected in 23.75% of the study population while the presence of IgG antibodies to PvAMA-1 antigen was 66.25% in the same population. PvBrVIR-E was adhesive to CHO-ICAM1. MAIN CONCLUSIONS PvBrVIR-E was antigenic and adhesive to CHO-ICAM1.

Introduction:Patients with short teeth and open battlements, report a lot of dissatisfaction with their smile. Gingivoplasty, when properly indicated, allows for an increase in the size of the dental crown in order to reduce the need for incisal augmentation with composite resin. Resuscitation with composite resins for the closure of niches and incisal increases represents a conservative alternative, as it is a direct adhesive technique that can be performed without any dental wear. Furthermore, it is a preferable reversible technique for young patients. Objective:To present a case report of a 22-year-old male patient, dissatisfied with the size, color and shape of his anterior teeth.Case Description:The clinical examination showed a short crown, physiological darkening, interdental spaces and misalignment of the incisal edges. The proposed treatment plan was to refer to gingivoplasty, tooth whitening by the associated technique and aesthetic reanatomization of the anterior teeth with stratified direct composite resin with different layers and colors, and later surface texturing during the final polishing and finishing phases. Conclusions:With gingivoplastyand restorations, we obtained reanatomized teeth, reproducing natural form, texture and color. With proper planning and technique, it was possible to restore the smile with satisfactory proportions, shape and naturalness (AU).

ABSTRACT

The semi-direct technique performed with composite resin can be an excellent treatment option for deep and extensive restorations on posterior teeth due to technical difficulties in the use of composite resin by the direct technique, as well as the higher cost and time of treatment of indirect restorations with porcelain. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of different treatments of the restoration surface, types of resin cement for cementation and aging times on the bond durability to dentin, failure pattern and nanoleakage of semi-direct restorations. 320 bovine incisors were used (N = 320), from which discs of 4.0 mm thickness were obtained and, in its most central portion, a conical cavity preparation with 4.8 mm in diameter and 2.8 mm in diameter was made. The samples were divided into 16 groups according to the resin cement: RelyX Ultimate (ULT) e RelyX U200 (U200); resin surface treatment: Silane (S), Single Bond Universal (SBU) and S+SBU; and aging time: 24 hours (24h) and 6 months (6m). The analyzes performed were: Bond Strength to push-out extrusion (BS), Failure Pattern (FP) and Nanoleakage (NL). The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics using ANOVA Three Way with Tukey's Post Hoc (p <0.005). For BS, ULT showed better performance in both times of aging. SBU showed better results after 6m when associated with ULT. The averages increased with time for U200, except when silane was used as a surface treatment. In the analysis of the FP, the ULT presented the highest percentage of mixed failure, when the fracture occurred simultaneously in dentin or restored material and at the adhesive interface, at both times of aging and when it was used in association with SBU or S + SBU as treatment resin surface. The different surface treatments and aging times did not influence nanoleakage at the cement-resin interface. According to the results found in this laboratory study, a better performance was observed for the ULT and among the surface treatments, the use of SBU enabled greater BS, however it did not influence the nanoleakage at the cement-resin interface. It is suggested that semi-direct composite resin restorations can be cemented with ULT with SBU as a resin surface treatment, as well as with U200, without the need for any chemical treatment in the restoration (AU).

ABSTRACT

Bioadhesive preparation can be attached to specific sites to control drug release rate, increase drug concentration and increase efficacy, which is based on natural or synthetic polymer material. In this paper, based on the physical properties of wet mass, a method for screening adhesion formulation was proposed, which was different from conventional way of screening optimal formulation, and astragalosides loaded bioadhesive pellets were prepared by extrusion-spheronization method (extrusion speed 30 r·min-1, spheronization speed 808 r·min-1, spheronization time 7.5 min) based on this formulation screening method, small living animal imaging technology and mucin from porcine stomach model were used to evaluate the in vivo and invitro adhesiveness behaviour of the pellets. According to the relationship between the physical properties of wet mass and the formability and adhesiveness of bioadhesive pellets, five key physical properties hardness (Ha), adhesiveness (Ad), springiness (Sp), cohesiveness (Co), chewiness (Ch) were selected as the index of screening optimal formulation, therefore a comprehensive evaluation model was established, which based on principal component analysis, to did digital ranking for these proposed adhesion formulation, the optimal formulation was determined: microcrystalline cellulose: (chitosan∶Carbomer 940 = 2∶1), the adhesive material dosage accounted for 20% of the excipient dosage, and the ratio of drugs to excipients was 1 : 4. All animal experiments have been approved by Ethics Committee of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The in vivo and in vitro adhesive evaluation results showed the pellets had a clear advantage in intestinal adhesion over normal pellets, its also proved the scientificity and reliability of the method of screening bioadhesive formulation.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Cast post and core (CPC) is the main used post type; however, the biomechanical behavior of CPCs adhesively luted to the dentin is still unclear. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance (FR) and fracture modes of teeth restored with CPCs luted with zinc-phosphate (ZP) or resin-based self-adhesive (SA) cements, as well as the influence of the coronal remnant. Methods: For that, 24 human premolars were divided into four groups according to the cement (ZP or SA) and coronal remnant (with or without 2mm). FR was tested in a universal machine and data analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (α=.05). Fracture modes were classified according to the degree of dental destruction. Results: The results showed that there was no difference in FR (p=.352); however, teeth without ferrule presented more irreparable fractures, specially in the ZP group. Conclusion: All in all, self-adhesion of CPCs does not enhance fracture resistance, however it reduces the number of irreparable fractures, compared to ZP cement

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the effect of different surface treatments and polymerization protocols on the bond strength of brackets to enamel, and the degree of conversion of the bonding agents. Methods: 120 bovine crowns were embedded in acrylic resin blocks and sanded. Next, the blocks were randomly assigned into 12 groups. Metal brackets were bonded to enamel according to the "surface treatment" factor (A: Phosphoric Acid; ATxt: Phosphoric Acid + Transbond XT Primer®; Tse: Transbond Plus Self Etching Primer®; and SBU: Scotchbond Universal®) and "polymerization" factor (R20: Radii-Cal®/20 seconds; V20: Valo Cordless®/20 seconds; and V3: Valo Cordless®/3 seconds). All samples were stored for 6 months (water, 37ºC) and then subjected to a shear bond strength test (SBS). Using the same factors, 120 resin discs were made to assess the degree of conversion (DC) of the monomer. Data from the SBS (MPa) and DC (%) were analyzed by analysis of variance (2 factors) and Tukey's test (5%). Bond failures were classified according to the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) and analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (5%). Results: For the SBS, the factors "polymerization" (R20=8.1B; V20=13.2A; V3=5.2C, p=0.0001) and "surface treatment" (A=3.1C; ATxt=13.6A; Tse=12.3A; SBU=6.3B, p=0.0001) were statistically significant among groups. The highest adhesion value were found for the ATxtV20 group (22.2A) and the lowest value for the A/R20 group (1.2E). Regarding ARI, score 2 was the most prevalent in groups A, ATxt, V20 and V3, while score 4 was the most prevalent in the Tse, SBU and R20 groups, with no significant difference between them (p=1.0). Regarding DC, the factors "polymerization" (R20=66.6A; V20=58.4B; V3=45.1C, p=0.0001) and "surface treatment" (A=52B, ATxt=59.7A, Tse=51.4B, SBU=63.8A, p=0.0001) were statistically significant. Conclusions: Tse was more sensitive to the variations in polymerization protocols than the other surface treatments. Treatment A did not present suitable bond strength or degree of conversion (AU).

ABSTRACT

Introduction: One of the most common treatments of head and neck cancer patients is radiotherapy, a treatment method which uses ionizing radiation beam and destroys tumor cells, minimizing damage to neighbor cells. Purpose: To evaluate the bond strength of a conventional adhesive system in irradiated teeth. Method: 24 third human molars, 12 of which were randomly exposed to radiation and prepared from the removal of occlusal enamel, then exposed to a flat dentine surface. The adhesive system Stae was applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. Next, two 2 mm increments of resin were implemented. The samples were hemi sectioned specimens, originating shapped toothpick. To evaluate the bond strength, a micro tensile test was done with 500N load and speed of 0.5 mm/minute. Result: There was no statistically significant difference between the bond strength of teeth which were or were not exposed to radiation and which used a conventional adhesive system. Conclusion: Although the radiation doses applied may cause some alterations in microscopic range in dental tissues, it can be concluded that these alterations do not influence in the bond strength in dentin of irradiated teeth.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The Primekote® (TP) polymer was incorporated to the of Orthodontic Bracket mesh base to improve bond strength and make it more efficient. The purpose of this study was to assess the shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index (ARI) of these brackets. Material and method: The test sample consisted of thirty bovine incisors divided into 2 groups: with a group with TP® brackets (n=15), and a control group with Morelli® brackets (n=15) without Primekote® technology. The TransbondTM XT was used as adhesive system in both groups, following the same protocol and manufacturer’s instructions. Specimens were stored in distilled water for 24 hours and then submitted to shear bond strength test in a universal testing machine (EMIC DL2000). The assessment of ARI was performed under stereomicroscope by two calibrated examiners. Result: No significant differences (p>0.05) in shear bond strength were found between the two groups according to the independent t-test. The Wilcoxon test was used to assess ARI data and statistical difference was found between Morelli® and TP® Nu-Edge brackets; the last one left less remaining adhesive on tooth surface. Conclusion: TP® brackets had higher adherence to the adhesive system as shown by lower ARI scores, but this does not improve its clinical performance.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the effect of extrusion factors such as extrusion speed, screen hole diameter, and extrusion times on the texture properties of extrudate and the quality of pellets. Methods: In this study, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) as pelletization aid, lactose, Methocel E5 HPMC, Methocel E15 HPMC, Methocel K100 HPMC, and eight kinds of herbal extracts (extracts of Areca catechu, Patrinia scabiosae folia, Acorus tatarinowii, Sargentodoxa cuneata, Psoralea corylifolia, Dachuanxiong Decoction, Ligusticum chuanxiong, and Gastrodia elata) were used as model drugs. Extrudates were prepared under different levels of process parameters, and one part was used to measure the texture parameters, the other part used for quality evaluation after spheronization. Results: With a large screen hole diameter, it showed that hardness of extrudate became lower and the adhesiveness as well as the springiness was significantly higher, leading to a large particle size and poor roundness of pellets. Repeated extrusion could increase hardness, cohesiveness, chewiness, and resilience of extrudate. Not any strong correlation was found between the extrusion speed and texture properties in the study. Conclusion: The extrusion process could be purposefully selected to prepare ideal pellets accroding to texture properties of extrudate.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of restorative protocol with sodium ascorbate on the shear bond strength (SBS) of a universal adhesive to intracoronal bleached dentin. One hundred-and-twenty bovine dentin fragments were randomly divided into 12 groups (n=10), according to the bleaching procedure (unbleached and bleached) and restorative protocol (no treatment, 10% sodium ascorbate -10SA, 35% sodium ascorbate -35SA and two-step etch-and-rinse -ER or one-step self-etch -SE Scotchbond universal adhesive approaches). Four whitening sessions were performed using 35% hydrogen peroxide. The samples from control groups were kept in relative humidity at 37 °C. Immediately after bleaching procedures, the assigned antioxidant solution was applied on dentin and restorative procedures were performed following either the ER or the SE approach. After 24 h, the specimens were subjected to SBS test. Data (MPa) were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (?=0.05). Lower SBS values were found for bleached specimens (8.54 MPa) compared with those unbleached (12.13 MPa) (p<0.05). The bond strength of the sodium ascorbate-treated groups was higher than those untreated, regardless of the strategy employed (p<0.05). Groups restored without sodium ascorbate showed lower bond strength values for both ER (8.32 MPa) and SE (8.28 MPa) adhesive strategies. The group treated with 10SA submitted to ER approach (10.14 MPa) was similar to untreated groups (p>0.05). It may be concluded that bond strength of composite resin to intracoronal dentin was affected by restorative protocol and reduced by bleaching.

ABSTRACT

The adequate establishment of hybrid layer in the root canal on bonding process is still a clinical challenge due to its hard access. Thus, the use of proteolytic inhibitors could become a favorable tool. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of proteolytic inhibitors in the bonding of a glass- fiber post fixed with a luting cement, regarding the root thirds and different times through the bond strength. One hundred and forty four bovine roots were selected and divided into 6 treatment groups, and subdivided according to the time of evaluation of 24 hours, 6 and 12 months (n=8). After endodontic treatment and standardized removal procedure, the roots were cemented with tapered glass fiber posts (Exacto/ Angelus). The roots were treated with three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose/ 3M ESPE (SBMP) and dual cement RelyX ARC/ 3M ESPE. After previous division, CN (negative- control without pre associated treatment), CP (Control positive- with activator and catalyst agents) EDTA (17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) CHX (2% chlorhexidine digluconate) E-5 (5µM E-64) and E-10 (10µM E-64). After 24h, the roots were sectioned perpendicular to the long axis and identified according to third in 1mm thick slices (cervical, middle and apical), which were stored in artificial saliva to be tested. All slices were subjected to extrusion tests (push-out) in the universal test machine (Instron) at 50 N load cell at 0.5 mm/min. Data were analyzed with three-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons with Tukey test, both with p <0.05. After 24 hours, no differences were observed between treatments. After 6 months, CHX showed better performance, which did not last up 12 months. The proteolytic inhibitors performed differently in the bonding process over time; only CHX promoted inhibition at 6 months. The use of proteolytic inhibitors were not able to maintain the bond strength of intraradicular posts up time of 12 months.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Background: To assist the retention of restorations prepared in endodontically treated teeth, fiber posts are widely used in dental practice. The ideal time to prepare space for the post is still controversial. Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of immediate and delayed postspace preparation on the retention of the self‑adhesive resin cement. Materials and Methods: Twelve bovine teeth were used with sectioned roots standardized to 19 mm. The teeth were properly instrumented and filled with gutta‑percha and eugenol‑free cement AH Plus. Two experimental groups (n = 6) were created based on the different times of post preparation (immediate and delayed). Using cemented cylindrical fiber posts, the teeth were put in acrylic resin and polyvinyl chloride tubes, where the cuts were made. Two slices were obtained from the cervical third, two from the medium third and two from the apical third. Subsequently, the samples were subjected into push‑out tests. Statistical analysis were performed using ANOVA and Tukey’s test (P = 5%). Results: The results indicated that, for all of the evaluated thirds, delayed preparation showed greater bond strength than immediate preparation. Conclusion: A delayed post preparation of the root space, following the root canal filling, is recommended.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze possible correlations among tubular dentine cement penetration, adhesiveness and apical leakage in fillings performed with gutta percha and an endodontic cement based on epoxy amine resin. Material and Methods: Sixty similar, extracted human mandibular central incisors were irrigated, instrumented and filled following the same protocol. First, apical leakage was quantified by fluid filtration tests. Then, these same specimens were sectioned for analysis of tubular dentine cement penetration and the middle thirds were submitted to push-out tests to analyze the adhesiveness of the fillings. Results: In brief, the means and standard deviations with a confidence interval of 95% were as follows: tubular dentine cement penetration (8.875±4.540), adhesiveness (4.441±2.683) and apical leakage (0.318±0.215). The data were confronted using the Pearson's test (P>0.05), and it was possible to prove that there was no correlation between (1) tubular dentine cement penetration and apical leakage (r2: 0.08276), (2) tubular dentine cement penetration and adhesiveness (r2: -0.2412) and (3) adhesiveness and apical leakage (r2: 0.1340). Conclusion: After analysis of these data, it could be observed that there exists no correlation among the variables analyzed in this study. .
